Our RVICS project for November 2008 was Dothan Community Church in Dothan AL. Dothan is located in the South Eastern corner of AL. The Church is on the Northern side of the city. Dothan Community Church is committed to introducing the uncompromising message of the Gospel to people of all races with a genuine desire to practice racial reconciliation through the cross of Christ. DCC is in the process of adding a Children’s Center to their building (see plan photo). The are currently starting their third year of a projected four year project. RVICS has worked with them on two previous projects.
Our group at DCC consisted of: Fred and Rosie Ogrinc (our leaders), Andy and Audrey Ewing, Ken and Shirley Prouty, Ralphe and Shirley Rose, Jon and Jane Wendt, and us Ed and Mary Compton.
The men completed exterior work on the addition which included: install door frames; paint and install doors; install vinyl siding, soffit, fascia, and freeze board; complete west entrance (concrete pad, beam caps, trim, vinyl ceiling, paint, columns); trim west doors and windows. The men also did a few interior jobs; install kitchen hood vent, run conduit and pull wire to addition, rough in wiring for lights and outlets, frame interior walls, rough in plumbing, and other odds and ends. We started with a list of 22 jobs and when we finished them, did 8 more.
The ladies cleaned and organized, primed and painted, and repaired and recovered chairs at the church and then went to work at the Wiregrass Hope Center (a faith based organization offering help, hope, encouragement, counseling and education to families and pregnant women). At the Center they organized storerooms, made up gift bags, wrapped presents and filled Christmas stockings, did bulk mailing, prepared information packets, and unpacked and prepared linens for future use. Shirley P. crocheted baby booties for future mothers.
For tours, we visited the Carver Museum, Camp Victory, a cane syrup processor, and stopped to see cotton harvesting along the highway.
After work we could be found eating peanuts, roasting hot dogs, eating smores, or at one of our other socials.
Our church family at DCC opened their hearts and homes to us while in Dothan. We were invited to homes for meals, had meals brought to the church for us, and invited to spend thanksgiving with their families. Thank you DCC. We look forward to working with you in the future.
