RVICS project for January 7 - January 29, 2008
Zephyr Baptist Encampment is located about 40 miles west of Corpus Christi. Zephyr hosts retreats almost every weekend of the year. Groups enjoy Zephyr’s scenic campus on Lake Corpus Christi and each retreat group gets a private meeting space, plus lodging and great food. Zephyr’s accommodations vary from dorm style rooms to motel rooms, and they can accomodate up to 700 people. Zephyr hosts youth, kids, and family camps during Summer months.
The RVICS men worked on renovation of a summer staff cabin. The cabin is cement block construction, had three seperate rooms each with two very small restrooms and showers and seperate room air conditioning. We started by opening doorways in the cement block walls between the rooms to allow airflow for a new central furnace air conditioner, removed and closed the old air conditioner openings, and striped out the old showers and toilets. We then framed, built and tiled new larger showers in three of the old restroom areas and moved hot water heaters and toilets in the remaining three restroom area, and built lavatories.
The ladies cleaned and painted the hallway, restrooms, and meeting rooms in the gymnasium during the first three weeks. Cleaning included about 100 chairs with a few years accumulation of gum on the bottoms. Helped in the office with a mailing, and cleaned cabins during the last week.
While at Zephyr, we toured the USS Lexington, the King Ranch and Museum, and the Museum of Science and History.
